Fiddleheads seem like a symbol of survival in Maine.

They come up when we can trust that winter is behind us,

and they give us the first wild green food of the season.

I always think of the small Spring Beauty as a companion flower,

where I live they bloom where and when the Fiddleheads are ready,

and the Little Red Newts (a.k.a. Efts) come out for a stroll.
